Screenshots of Clueless Bosses Who Clearly Don’t Understand the Meaning of Work/Life Balance

Life is about more than a job, but a lot of bosses out there don’t want to recognize that. From a CEO who expects their employees to leave their desk only twice a day to a boss who thinks that weekends are only for those who earned them, we’ve compiled a list of screenshots featuring clueless bosses who clearly don’t understand the meaning of work/life balance.

The Bathroom Smell Check

While businesses seem to have a problem with it, humans have to go to the bathroom once in a while. It’s just an anatomical fact and something that can’t be controlled with threats or other tactics. But that doesn’t mean that bosses don’t try…

The Bathroom Smell Check

This boss seriously crossed a line with this. What if people’s number twos simply don’t smell that much, or if they have digestive issues that keep them in the bathroom for a while? Either way, it’s none of their boss’s business.

Cancel Those Plans

Days off are days off, and every person is entitled to do what they want with their free time. But don’t tell your boss that, because they’ll disagree and try to call you into work anyway, as this boss did.

Cancel Those Plans

While everyone understands that the boss has to do what they can to get shifts covered, asking an employee to cancel plans on a day off and acting like you’re entitled to ask such a thing is not okay.

But Not That Early

Some bosses are so out of touch with reality that we all question how they’re still in their positions. One idea that they seem to have is that their workers must sacrifice all aspects of their personal lives for work.

But Not That Early

Who decided exactly that “youngsters” in the workforce are unreasonable for expecting a work/life balance and to spend time with family? That’s one of the most ridiculous statements ever uttered by a boss. Your employees aren’t indentured.

Stop Being a Victim

Losing a family member is devastating, and the last thing anyone in that position would want to do is go to work. One would hope that their boss understands and is empathetic, but sadly, that isn’t always the case.

Stop Being a Victim

Imagine thinking that going to work after suffering a family loss is some sort of competition and actually having the nerve to imply they’re “being a victim.” We hope that the boss got fired after this exchange.

Too Many Water Breaks

While most of us don’t do a very good job of actually keeping up with drinking enough water, we all know how important it is to stay well hydrated. And drinking water is the last thing you would expect your boss to nitpick you for, yet this boss did just that.

Too Many Water Breaks

How DARE Jake try and stay healthy! We’d hardly call standing up for a couple of minutes to refill a water bottle “taking a break.” This CEO has way too much time on his hands if this is the stuff he’s spending his time on.

Not in the Try Out Phase

It’s very common to negotiate over salary when in the interview phase of a new job. And it’s very common for part of that negotiation to be the future employer offering the candidate less money than they deserve.

Not in the Try Out Phase

Just because you worked for free doesn’t mean other people should do the same, and we doubt a well-paying job couldn’t teach you the same. Let’s stop expecting people to bow down to their boss and the boss’s whims.

Missing Your Child’s Birth

For parents, the moment their child is born is one of the happiest and most memorable days of their lives. It means expanding their family and bringing a new little life into the world. So what happens when you can’t be there because of your boss?

Missing Your Child’s Birth

His boss is a major jerk, and the fact that his boss is his dad just makes it worse. We understand why he was hesitant to leave and lose his job, but he should have never even been put into that position in the first place.

Sick of the Bare Minimum

Employees aren’t going to try very hard if they don’t feel respected and valued and aren’t being paid very well. A job is a means to an end and, contrary to popular belief from every boss, life doesn’t revolve around work.

Sick of the Bare Minimum

It’s only logical that if you’re going to pay your employees the bare minimum, they’re going to put in the bare minimum effort required. You’re telling them with the poor pay that they aren’t worth more, so why should they try?

Not Uncomfortable Enough

Some workplaces don’t allow employees to sit down. They seem to think it’s because it gives off an impression of laziness, but really it’s just another way to control what employees do. That was made clear by this grumpy boss.

Not Uncomfortable Enough

Imagine having such a high-performing employee, and all you can focus on is the fact that they dared to sit down while on shift. Rather than work/life balance, this boss seems to struggle with the concept of a work/comfort balance!

No Breaks in Vehicles

When you’ve had a long day at work and your break comes around, sometimes all you want to do is get away from your coworkers and boss. The break room isn’t always a safe place to do so, as some people struggle to understand personal space and peace and quiet.

No Breaks in Vehicles

That’s why people eat in their cars. At least they did - until now. It’s not a safety rule, it’s a way to obsess over where employees are and what they’re doing, even when they’re not on the clock!

You Need This Job

Scheduling issues are one of the most frustrating parts of working hourly jobs. You get booked for shifts during times you’ve said you aren’t available, you have to get your missed shifts covered on your own, and you rarely get holidays off.

You Need This Job

It’s so disrespectful to disregard the free time and wishes of your employees just because you know they need the paycheck. That boss was taking advantage of her and didn’t even try to hide it. No wonder she quit.

Not On-Call

Working as a contractor can be tough. Companies expect you to act the same as any other employee, yet you don’t have the same rights, like paid time off or insurance. It’s common to run into problems like the one between this boss and contractor.

Not On-Call

We really hope they sent that message because it’s unfair to expect employees to be on call if that’s not what was agreed upon. They have lives outside of work, even when they’re “on the road.”

Fake it Until You Make It

Getting out of a long-term relationship is hard, especially when it’s for a serious reason. So when this employee broke up with her boyfriend of four years after he cheated on her, this message from her boss was the last thing she expected.

Fake it Until You Make It

Leaving your feelings at the door just isn’t possible sometimes, no matter what her boss says. They obviously don’t support her THAT much if they expect her to be fine in a week. The sad cakes will survive.

No Value Added

Sometimes, a boss just doesn’t think about the impact their words have on their employees. Or maybe it’s really that they just don’t care. That’s what happened when this person asked for a raise.

No Value Added

If they didn’t add any value to the company, why did they hire them in the first place? You can’t expect someone to drop everything to work for you but then belittle them. We bet this isn’t the first person who has quit if that’s how they’re treated.

Serious Lack of Compassion

Some bosses don’t seem to know how to do anything other than threaten their employees. It’s like they can’t step away from their need to fill the schedule long enough to recognize that their employees are human.

Serious Lack of Compassion

This boss shouldn’t have texted this particular employee in the first place, let alone threaten to deduct from their unpaid time off. We hope that if something happened to the boss’s family, their own boss would show them more compassion than they showed this person.

Ought to Read the Contracts

Some employers don’t seem to pay attention to what they agree to when hiring a contractor. Maybe it’s because they’re used to being able to push their employees around, and expect not to receive any pushback. Gary wasn’t afraid to push back, though.

Ought to Read the Contracts

While Gary could’ve probably been a little more professional, he was completely correct. That boss had no right to demand him to attend meetings neither party agreed to in the contract. Enjoy sleeping in, Gary!

Block Out Day

Block out days are days that employees aren’t allowed to specifically request off, usually because they’re shifts that are hard for employers to fill, like on holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving. It seems that the boss man will go to extreme lengths to threaten employees into working those days.

Block Out Day

These employees are so bad, wanting to spend Christmas with their families instead of at work! They must just lack work ethic; at least, that’s what their boss thinks. “Severe consequences” are less important than family, at the end of the day.

I’m Still Here

Having to work through a pregnancy is hard, both for the spouse who’s pregnant and the spouse who’s supporting them. It becomes even harder if it’s a risky pregnancy, as all you want to do is focus on whether or not everyone’s doing okay.

I’m Still Here

We can almost guarantee that this person was still getting all of their work done and doing what they needed to do. The boss just wanted to complain about them not “leaving their personal life at the door.”

Continue to Deliver

People who live in states like Florida are pretty used to hurricanes. They get them so often that most people just hunker down and wait them out. This boss is so used to them that she acted as if they should be forced to work through one.

Continue to Deliver

Apparently, this boss is an expert on hurricanes and is capable of dictating whether they’re going to be bad enough to stop them from getting their “good end of quarter.” Asking employees to come in is so far beyond ridiculous!

It’s Gonna Be Problematic

Speaking of natural disasters, in February of 2021, Texas faced what’s now known as the “Texas Great Freeze,” where temperatures dropped to record lows, making the road super dangerous and causing serious power outages. But that didn’t stop this boss from being unreasonable.

It’s Gonna Be Problematic

Imagine feeling so entitled to your employee’s time that you ask them to risk their safety and, quite possibly, their life just to make their shift. To be rude about it when they explain why is just unreasonable!

There’s No Grace Period

When it comes to days off, an “EL day” usually means an emergency leave day. It’s when employees need a day off on short notice for some sort of personal emergency. This boss decided to try and twist those days to their benefit.

There’s No Grace Period

Their employees must not be human and make mistakes, or they’ll forfeit their right to time off. Your boss apparently owns you to the point that they can force you to spend every second of your time as they see fit.

This Is a Red Flag

When looking for a new job, it’s perfectly natural to want to know details about the pay. As much as employers would like to think we work from the goodness of our hearts, really, it’s because we all need money to live.

This Is a Red Flag

What this potential boss really meant to say was, “This is a red flag that you won’t let us walk all over you like we want to.” Thank goodness they said something because this potential employee saved themselves from working a horrible, exploitative job.

I Understand Nothing

There should be a law against how little notice a boss can give an employee when asking them to cover someone else’s shift. Anything less than at least a few hours is unreasonable.

I Understand Nothing

It takes a lot of nerve to say “I understand nothing” and threaten to fire an employee because they won’t drop everything to show up to work in less than an hour on a weekend. It can’t be all work, no life.

You Heard What I Said

Facing an aisle is something most grocery store workers have to do at the end of their shifts. It involves pulling items forward on a shelf and making sure the labels are facing outward to make everything look uniform.

You Heard What I Said

Sure, it’s important, but not so important that a boss has a right to physically stop an employee from clocking out and leaving. This feels like the boss holding them hostage, which definitely doesn’t create a healthy workplace.

Minimize Any Disruption

PTO, or paid time off, are employee vacation days. Most employees don’t get nearly as many as they deserve, and then they get guilt tripped into not taking the ones that they do have - like this boss tried to do.

Minimize Any Disruption

Sure, if there’s a slightly more convenient time to take time off and it works for your plans, then maybe you should consider that. But you’re not responsible for your team running smoothly, as the other person kindly pointed out.

Proper Procedure Wasn’t Followed

Some workplaces get weirdly controlling when it comes to employees showing up late. Of course, it’s important for employees to be on time, but life happens. If it’s not a habit, it doesn’t seem worth freaking out over.

Proper Procedure Wasn’t Followed

This boss is so petty that they’re holding a shirt hostage because an employee showed up a few minutes late ONCE. This sounds like such a horribly toxic work environment. Hopefully, they’ve since found a better job.

For Love Is Immortality

We lose coworkers in many ways. Sometimes they get fired. Other times, they themselves find a new job and leave for greener pastures. But occasionally, something happens that takes them from this world.

For Love Is Immortality

So the employees can get fired for being upset about, and talking about, their coworker passing away? This seems insanely insensitive. It’s even more insensitive that the boss tried to use a person’s passing to boost productivity by saying they “wouldn’t have wanted” the productivity to slide.

Sickness Will Be Monitored

No one enjoys taking sick days off of work. They may feel bad about leaving work short staffed, but it’s also as simple as no one enjoys getting sick and they’d probably rather be at work.

Sickness Will Be Monitored

This is an insane level of trying to control employees’ lives. People can’t choose to get sick at times convenient to their job. If they could, they would choose to not get sick at all. What happens when this boss gets sick?

Make Time to Scale Up

There’s nothing better than leaving work at work and enjoying your hobbies in your free time, like practicing your guitar skills or watching a sporting event. But this boss thinks that you shouldn’t actually do those things.

Make Time to Scale Up

Instead, you should dedicate all of your free time to work-related skills. Why enjoy life when you can make everything about work, all the time? It’d be great if bosses could stop guilt tripping people for having hobbies.

No One Showed Up

The minimum wage, contrary to popular belief, was designed to be a minimum wage people needed in order to live comfortably. It wasn’t designed to be a bare-bones paycheck for “young teens learning how to work.” And even more than minimum wage is barely enough these days.

No One Showed Up

$14 hasn’t been enough to survive on in a really long time, buddy, especially when it’s only part-time so they won’t even be entitled to benefits. No wonder you’ve only got a team of two if that’s what they’re being paid!

Are You In?

Most people aren’t going to respond to messages that they receive after a certain time of night. They especially aren’t going to respond to messages they receive from their boss that late at night, as it’s pretty unprofessional.

Are You In?

This boss didn’t care, though, and seriously expected an employee they texted at 3:00 am to show up to work six hours later. The employee ignored them, as they had every right to. We just hope the boss didn’t try to blame the employee, but they probably did.

Whoever Takes This Opportunity

When this employee quit after being berated for calling out sick, they apparently hadn’t been removed from their old employer’s email list, and they received this email. They couldn’t believe what they were seeing!

Whoever Takes This Opportunity

Not only did they name and shame the terminated employees, which is really unprofessional, but they also tried to get people to work extra for free with a fake promise of a raise and calling it “taking an opportunity.” We doubt anyone appreciates the “privilege” of working there.

Never Gave Up on You

Getting sick is always really difficult. Even if you aren’t that sick, you still have to stay at home for a bit, to avoid getting others ill.

Never Gave Up on You

This boss wanted to force their employee to come in while they were sick because they couldn’t find someone to cover their shift, which should be the boss’s job anyway. And then they tried to guilt trip him when he rightfully quit.

You Lacked Discipline

2020 was really hard for most people. Spending so much time indoors, without having frequent, meaningful interactions with other human beings, can take a big toll psychologically. Most people were just trying to get through it.

You Lacked Discipline

Sure, if you were able to, using that time productively was great. But most people didn’t have the mental capacity for new things, and they shouldn’t be shamed into feeling bad about it.

A Little Bonus

A lot of bosses or managers are a bit out of touch with the reality that their employees face. They think that things like pizza parties or silly certificates are enough to keep employees happy and productive; or in this case, giving them a “bonus.”

A Little Bonus

Wow, giving these employees, who are likely working their tails off for minimum wage, $1 for their uniforms is SO generous! They’d probably prefer better pay and better hours. But one can’t be too greedy, can they?

Not Going to Be Approved

One of the most heartbreaking things that can happen to a family is having to put down a family pet. Dogs and cats truly become members of the family, and losing them would take a toll on any person with a heart.

Not Going to Be Approved

This person’s boss doesn’t seem to have a heart and genuinely asked this person to reschedule putting down their dog because it was inconvenient for her work schedule. We think one thing is clearly more important than the other.

Short-Term Sacrifice, Long-Term Gain

Most bosses love to rave about all the “sacrifices” they’ve made to get into the positions that they’re in. Sure, we should admire hard work, but stopping your life for your job is a bit extreme - which is what this boss did.

Short-Term Sacrifice, Long-Term Gain

You, sir, frankly made a really bad decision turning down that all-expense paid trip to Alaska. Just because you enjoy suffering at work, with no time off, doesn’t mean others should choose the same path. He’ll regret that decision one day.

We All Need to Pull Together

Most people can’t actually afford to take vacations. Either their jobs won’t pay them for the time off, or they have to save their “vacation” days for other things, like their kids getting sick. Meanwhile, their bosses are rolling in money.

We All Need to Pull Together

What this boss is really saying is, “Thank you all for working so hard to pay for our vacation! Now we need you to work even harder to make us more money, thanks!” The message is loud and clear.

Commitment for Work Hours Only

There’s this really toxic expectation in a lot of offices that good employees should want to frequently stay beyond the time agreed upon in their contract. It gets to the point where it’s expected of them, which this CEO makes clear.

Commitment for Work Hours Only

Of course their commitment only lasts during work hours! That’s the whole point of having a job - you make money to pay your bills and pay for your hobbies so that you can live your life. Not everyone is a CEO whose life revolves around work!

A Working Interview

It’s natural to need some time to see if a new employee is a good fit. It’s not natural to ask new employees to work for free so that you can “see how they work” as this potential boss did.

A Working Interview

How many potential employees do you think this restaurant has had come in and work for free, just to not actually hire them? This boss is definitely taking advantage of people! People have to try out to work there as if they’re cheerleaders in high school!

Must Participate in Group Chat

Group chats are one of those things that you either love or you hate. They can be really convenient for keeping in touch, but they almost always end up being two people having a conversation they could’ve just had privately, blowing up everyone else’s phones.

Must Participate in Group Chat

Friends are friends, and coworkers are coworkers. This boss shouldn’t think they can force people to share personal life details. Anything the boss forces them to do is, in fact, work and should be paid accordingly. It sounds like the boss is lonely.

Show That You’re Keen

Every person has a definition of being on time, but perhaps the worst one is the idea of “if you’re not five minutes early, you’re late.” It’s a toxic way to make people feel guilty and squeeze a few extra minutes of work out of them.

Show That You’re Keen

A scheduled time is a scheduled time. If they wanted the employee there earlier, they should have said so. It’s ridiculous to think employees should magically know what they expect. It sounds like this potential employee dodged a bullet.

Never Assume You’re Off

The whole point of the boss making a schedule is for the schedule to be advertised in advance so that employees know when they have to come in. So if a schedule hasn’t been posted, the boss is to blame.

Never Assume You’re Off

How many employees do you think this company has randomly showing up at work if this is their policy? This is just a boss who made a mistake and is now trying to pawn the mistake off on the employee.

This Is Gaming

Crunch culture is a common practice in the video game industry. It’s when the developers end up having to work insanely long hours, sometimes upwards of 80 hours a week. It’s a very problematic practice.

This Is Gaming

The person who explained how this is weaponized passion is 100% correct. This boss expects their employees’ lives to revolve around work, and that just isn’t healthy. It turns a career most people start out loving into something they hate.

Weekends Are for the Weak

Everyone deserves to have time to rest, and that’s what weekends are for. They’re for spending time with family, catching up on sleep, or doing whatever else we need and want to do in our free time. They’re not for guilt-tripping people into working even more.

Weekends Are for the Weak

Isn’t literally everyone full of potential in terms of income, fitness, and wealth? No one is more entitled to those things than another, it’s simply that some people have more opportunities and resources. What a narrow-minded way of thinking!
