Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s Banter
Aren’t these two just adorable? Acclaimed actors Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have been together since 1983, which is basically a century in Hollywood. Together, they have son Wyatt — and Goldie’s famous daughter Kate Hudson considers Kurt her father.
Perhaps part of their success is managing to stay light-hearted about life in the spotlight. In this sweet snap, Kurt and Goldie are acknowledging the celebrity photographers following them around. Goldie points right at the camera lens, while Kurt chuckles along. Never change, guys!
Jaden Smith’s Iron Man Suit
Here we have Will and Jada Smith’s son Jaden wearing a full-on Iron Man suit. Well, what else would we expect from the ever-dramatic actor and rapper? This picture is actually a bit of a pop-culture artifact. Just look at this teenage, pre-billionaire Kylie Jenner!
She’s literally wearing leopard print and rocking her original lips. Clearly, Jaden didn’t want to be photographed by paparazzi. Or… did he want to be photographed by paparazzi? With these guys, it’s hard to tell.
Shaquille O’Neal’s Spindly Tree
There are a bunch of celebrities on this list that aren’t very creative when it comes to dealing with photographers. For these folks, it’s all about the environment around them. Spot a tree? Hide! See a mailbox? Duck! And usually, this just ends up in a rather amusing photograph.
For example, here we have the 7’1″, 325-pound basketball icon Shaquille O’Neal. It would be pretty tough to hide Shaq at the best of times, never mind with a tree. We’re afraid it’s a fail.
Grant Gustin’s Jolly Jump
Here’s a celebrity that takes a completely different approach. Rather than hide from the cameras, actor, and singer Grant Gustin decides to really ham it up. Hey, if they’re going to photograph you anyway, why not give them a weird shot?
That way, it’s clear they’ve been sneakily stalking you as you live your life. In this shot, the CW star has gone for a jaunty heel-click. We’d certainly prefer this sort of shot over a picture of the star trying to eat a sandwich in peace.
Pete Doherty’s Camera Soak
English musician — and Kate Moss’s ex-boyfriend — certainly knows how to create chaos. The Libertines and Babyshambles frontman has been all over the British tabloids for his wild lifestyle.
Along with iconic singer Amy Winehouse, the musician was constantly snapped at his London residence. As a result, Pete Doherty decided to playback. In this picture, we see him gleefully throwing a bucket of water on a nearby camera. It actually resulted in a pretty cool shot.
Vanessa Stiviano’s Visor Combo
Vanessa Stiviano certainly has reason to cover her face from the paps. The model was at the center of an NBA scandal back in 2014, due to her affair with Donald Sterling — then owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Footage of the pair talking led to Sterling receiving a lifetime ban from the NBA for racist comments. Plus, Donald Sterling’s wife sued Vanessa to return all the gifts she received from the disgraced businessman. So, we totally get the choice of hat and visor!
Benedict Cumberbatch’s Tissue Face
Some celebrities are rather creative when it comes to dealing with intrusive paparazzi. Over the years, English actor Benedict Cumberbatch has tried various strategies to keep his face out of the press. This attempt is both hilarious, and absolutely ridiculous.
Of course, once a famous and acclaimed actor puts a tissue on his face, he pretty much guarantees his picture will appear online. But hey, if this makes Benedict maintain some sense of privacy, more power to him!
Sarah Hyland And Dominic Sherwood’s Stuff-You Face
Look, if we were constantly followed and photographed, we’d stick our tongues out too. Who can blame American actress Sarah Hyland and her then-boyfriend, English actor Dominic Sherwood for this childish outburst? Sure, it’s kind of immature.
And, like many examples on this list, it’s pointless. But still, we get it. Really, who needs pictures of these two going shopping anyway? Surely, there are more important things going on. Like, have you seen Benedict Cumberbatch’s tissue face?
Simon Cowell and Sinitta’s Fruit Phones
Usually, wherever you find English record executive and talent show judge Simon Cowell, you find singer Sinitta. The pair dated way back in the day, and have remained friends over the years. Of course, Sinitta has also appeared on a range of reality shows.
In this goofy picture, the pair are on a yacht messing with some nearby photographers. Rather than pose like the super-wealthy pair they are, these two decided to get creative with some fruit. Each to their own.
Will.i.am’s Digital Felix Mask
How on-brand is rapper and producer Will.i.am’s approach to the paparazzi? The star decided to hide his famous face by holding up an iPad featuring the cartoon character, Felix the Cat.
Of course, the former Black Eyed Peas star also collaborated with American DJ Felix da Housecat. Branding, eh? Will.i.am has spoken pretty strongly about the press. He said, “Paparazzi are the most disrespectful folk that the industry has. People don’t really realize just how intruding they are to one’s life.”
Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz’s Ad Space
Let’s take a trip back in time for our next example of celebrities dealing with intrusive paparazzi. Here we have iconic noughties couple Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz. These two were married from 2008 to 2011, giving us excellent pop-rock vibes until their eventual demise.
In this snap, singer, actress and designer Ashlee bears her face while Pete wears a paper plate mask. Naturally, the Fall Out Boy lyricist’s mask has googly eyes and space for prospective advertisers. What a good idea!
Matt Bellamy and Kate Hudson’s Covert Head-Coverings
We’ve already seen how Kate Hudson’s mom Goldie Hawn deals with the paps, but what’s her approach? Well, they’re clearly pretty different. This snap is from a decade ago, when the American actress was in a relationship with Muse frontman Matt Bellamy.
The English singer is obviously going for a bit more of a punk approach to dealing with photographers. Matt has fashioned a rather dangerous plastic bag balaclava for himself, while Kate sticks with the more old-fashioned hood and sunglasses combo.
Adam Levine’s Charity Plug
There are a bunch of celebrities on this list who used paparazzi to get a better message out there. This is a pretty great idea to be honest, especially because it has the added bonus of making the celebrity look caring.
Here we have Maroon 5 lead singer and talent show judge Adam Levine holding up donation details for the Red Cross. This is some nice free advertising for the organization, but we bet it didn’t keep Adam’s face out of the press.
Cara Delevingne’s Funny Face
So far, we’ve seen Sarah Hyland and Dominic Sherwood pull faces at intrusive photographers. Here we have that same reaction but from English model and actress Cara Delevingne. Ironically, the model usually keeps a straight face when photographed, so this was probably a great catch for whatever photographer snapped it.
Cara was clearly trying to enjoy a sandwich and some phone time when this picture was taken. Can’t a girl eat a snack without becoming a news story? Sheesh.
Isla Fisher’s Stroller Snafu
Oh, Isla. Don’t you know that ducking behind a stroller basically guarantees your picture will end up online? This is just the same problem we’ve seen with Shaquille O’Neal. If you’re a celeb, and you try to hide from photographers, you’ll just end up with a more embarrassing picture.
We’re not saying this is fair, or right. But sadly, it’s true! At least Isla managed to hide the bottom third of her famous face behind her adorable baby’s stroller.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s No-Neck Coat
Much like Benedict Cumberbatch, star Leonardo DiCaprio has tried several creative ways to avoid being photographed. The acclaimed actor hates being snapped when he’s out and about, and goes to great lengths to hide his extremely recognizable and famous face.
In this hilarious snap, the star relies on a giant puffer coat, a baseball cap pulled very low, and sunglasses to cover any face that might be slipping through. As a result, only his ears are peeking out.
Ed Sheeran’s Shy Psy Mask
We think English singer Ed Sheeran is really onto something here. The star kept his face hidden by using a cardboard mask of Korean singer and rapper Psy. Why don’t all celebrities carry around a range of masks to throw off the paparazzi?
Wouldn’t that be much more fun? Interestingly, the “Shape of You” singer did spend a night out on the town with the “Gangnam Style” star. In fact, Ed said that partying with the K-Pop star inspired his music video for “Sing.”
Kesha’s Kooky Cover Up
Next up is American singer-songwriter Kesha. Rather than try to blend in with her setting, the “Tik Tok” singer has decided to stick out as much as possible. Or, maybe she’s trying to hypnotize the photographer with kooky prints so he zones out and stops taking snaps.
Seriously, this is one properly psychedelic print. Kudos to Kesha for matching her face-covering scarf to the rest of her outfit. That’s one way to avoid wearing makeup between shows.
Shia LaBeouf’s Performance Paper Bag
What have we here? Well, this is a cross between paparazzi avoidance, and performance art. That’s what actor Shia LeBeouf would have us think anyway. The star stepped out with a paper bag on his head, and black plastic bags on his hands.
On another occasion, Shia wore a paper bag on the red carpet — except this time, it read, “I am not famous anymore.” Plus, the star sat inside an LA gallery for an entire week in this get-up.
Dustin Hoffman’s Mailbox Swerve
Oh, Dustin — why would you think this was a good idea? We like to imagine that if we were celebrities we’d simply swerve on our heel and walk in the other direction if we saw paparazzi. That way, they could only get the back of our heads.
Or, maybe walk into a busy store? Perhaps duck into a restaurant? Of course, it’s probably much more complicated than that, especially if you’re an A-lister like Dustin Hoffman. But this? This is never going to cut it.
Alec Baldwin’s Full Body Blanket
US actor Alec Baldwin has been all over the press in the past year. Famously, while working on a movie set in 2021, the star accidentally shot someone fatally. In fact, the incident is currently being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney.
But long before that, Alec Baldwin was trying to keep his head down. Or rather, covered. Here we have the A-lister striding around with a blanket over his entire body. Maybe he should return to that method?
David Beckham and Harper Seven’s Snub
Isn’t English footballer David Beckham a class act? As a dad of four, he’s not facing the paparazzi all by himself. In fact, even youngest child Harper Seven can take on the intrusive photographers that follow the family.
This picture is from way back when Harper was just a baby, but she knew what she was doing. While David was captured looking sharper than ever, little Harper stuck her tongue out at the passing paps. You get ’em, girl!
Joe Jonas’ Karate Kick
The Jonas Brothers must have had to deal with paparazzi for the majority of their lives. The singers released their debut album in 2006, and appeared in a bunch of Disney Channel shows and movies. So, how do the brothers deal with unwanted press attention?
With a karate kick, of course! We can basically hear Joe Jonas saying “hy ya!” as he pulls this move in front of the paparazzi. We wonder what Joe will be like when his adorable kids start getting snapped.
Jennifer Lawrence’s Walrus Tusks
We all know that actress Jennifer Lawrence enjoys a good laugh. She’s not scared of making a fool of herself, which is a good thing, considering her many goofy incidents. So naturally, J-Law has no problem looking like a fool in front of cameras. In fact, it seems to work pretty well for her.
This picture was taken back in 2015 as the star left a swanky restaurant. Taking inspiration from Rachel Green herself, the actress used chopsticks to give herself some fetching tusks.
Derek Hough and Marilu Henner’s Repressed Response
It must be annoying to constantly get photographed and be expected to ignore it. If some man kept popping out of the bushes and clicking in our face, we’d get pretty irritated pretty quickly. You can just about see the irritation bubbling under the surface of this picture.
Here we have dancer and choreographer Derek Hough with actress Marilu Henner. The pair were competing on Dancing With the Stars together in 2016, and ended up finishing in sixth place.
Jim Carrey’s Striking Swimsuit
Up next is bombastic actor Jim Carrey, who took a pretty outlandish approach to dealing with the paparazzi. From Jim’s perspective, these people are ruining his day on the beach anyway. So, why not give them a show?
While strolling on a Malibu beach with then-partner Jenny McCarthy, Jim popped inside to switch outfits. Unsurprisingly, when he emerged wearing the black one-piece, the photographers went wild. Jenny later remarked, “We just wanted to have some fun […] it was such a horse and pony show out there.”
Ashley Tisdale’s Puppy Protection
Here we have actress Ashley Tisdale using her adorable pup as protection from the paparazzi. Honestly, we’re surprised we haven’t seen more of this strategy. We know that celebrities like dogs – especially small, cute ones – and they’re the perfect size to hide faces from the cameras.
This curly stunner sadly passed away in 2019, leaving the actress completely distraught. She wrote of the Maltipoo, “This pain is the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Maui was my soulmate, the connection was unlike any other.”
Jessie Wallace’s Mr. Bean Bravado
Listen, we know Jessie Wallace isn’t the world’s best-known actress. However, she’s an iconic British soap star that had this genius response to the paparazzi. We’ve seen Ed Sheeran use a Psy mask to protect himself from photographers, but Jessie’s choice is clearly superior.
The Bafta-nominated actress has had plenty of run-ins with British tabloids over the years. We’re glad that she decided to deal with them by using Rowan Atkinson’s iconic character, the fumbling Mr. Bean.
Mike Myers’ Hockey Stick Heat
Talking of bravado, what about Mike Myers’ response to the paparazzi? This one did not go so well. The Canadian actor was with his pal in New York City when paparazzi tried to capture some shots of the pair.
Apparently, Myers’ friend attacked the photographer with his hockey stick, which ultimately led to five stitches. But, what about the actor? Well, it’s reported that he fled the scene! On the other hand, Myers’ friend claimed that the paparazzi made up these allegations to make themselves look like the victims.
Alex Rodriguez’s Parking Meter Miss
Well, here we go again. It’s another super recognizable star trying to hide behind an object that just isn’t big enough. When will they learn? This time we have baseball star Alex Rodriguez, or A-Rod, trying to use a parking meter as protection.
We’ve got news for you, pal — it didn’t work. As with Shaquille O’Neal, Isla Fisher, Dustin Hoffman, and so many more, this just resulted in an amusing picture that’s unlikely to disappear. Maybe he should invest in a Mr. Bean mask.
Ryan Gosling’s Grizzly Face
These celebrities can’t really win, can they? Their choice is either to ignore the paparazzi and get photographed, or address the paparazzi and get photographed. In this instance, we have A-list actor Ryan Gosling giving a grizzly face as he walks with his dog.
Of course, Ryan could have covered up a little more, but why should he? At least in these pictures, we know how he feels about having his privacy invaded. We reckon he’s not a fan.
Gerard Butler’s Phone Flip
Likewise, Scottish actor Gerard Butler isn’t impressed that he has to deal with intrusive photographers. The star was enjoying a drink when he realized that he was the subject of some secret photos.
So, he decided to flip the camera and give them a taste of their own medicine. Sadly, this is also a pretty pointless strategy. As with most times when celebrities respond to paps, they end up creating new headlines about themselves. We feel for you, Gerard.
Timbaland’s Paparazzi Performance
Producer and rapper Timbaland has had a pretty mega influence on the music scene. He’s the man behind huge hits by Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliot, Rihanna, and Jay-Z. So, it’s no surprise that photographers are keen to get some shots of the star.
How do we describe this particular paparazzi performance? It looks like Timbaland is both busting some moves, and trying to whip up a magic spell to make the photographers disappear. As always, it resulted in some rather hilarious pictures!
Miley Cyrus’s Honey Boo Boo Mask
We’ve seen a number of celebrities using masks on this list so far. This one is definitely one of our favorites. Here we have American popstar Miley Cyrus using reality star Honey Boo Boo’s face to tell photographers that there’s “no way” they’re getting a picture of her face.
Weirdly, years later, both Honey Boo Boo and her mom Mama June sang one of Miley’s songs on The Masked Singer. The pair crooned along to Miley’s “Party in the USA.”
Andy Dick’s Simple Acknowledgement
Over the years, comedian and actor Andy Dick has had multiple incidents with paparazzi. This photo is actually one of his calmer responses to people photographing him without consent.
While taking a phone call, the star stuck out his tongue to show that he could see whoever was snapping in his face. On other occasions, Andy Dick has taken much more extreme measures. When he and friends were denied entry to a club, the comedian chased a photographer down the Walk of Fame.
Jon Voight’s Valiant Effort
It’s that time again! When a very recognizable famous person thinks they can be protected by an inanimate object. Alas, as we’ve seen, this never works. In fact, this is a particularly lousy attempt. Here, actor (and estranged father of Angelina Jolie) Jon Voight, tries to use a bollard for cover.
This clearly could have never worked. The actor has spoken out about paparazzi before, especially in relation to the photographers who harassed Brangelina and their brood.
Misha Collins’ Playful Pose
And we’re back to the playful celebs, the ones that decide to give a goofy picture rather than a posed or angry one. American actor and producer Misha Collins has a habit of doing goofy poses when he spots an unwanted camera.
It looks like the star just jumps into some strange pose as soon as he realizes he’s a target for the paparazzi. We really recommend looking at the wide range of dorky poses Misha has done for the paps.
Tobey Maguire’s Scornful Snarl
American actor Tobey Maguire has a bit of a history when it comes to the paparazzi. In particular, he was caught on camera yelling and cursing at photographers. According to the star, the intrusive paps were endangering his life while he was trying to drive his car.
As we can see from this particular snap, Tobey is not happy when he spots someone taking his picture. Rather than hide or pose, he tends to give a pretty scathing look instead. We can’t say we blame him.
Tallulah Willis’ Obvious Outrage
As the daughter of A-listers Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Tallulah Willis is no stranger to dealing with paparazzi. In this snap, it looks like artist Tallulah realized she was being photographed exactly as it was happening.
Commenting on the unwanted attention, Tallulah has said, “Thank god we made the decision pre-utero to be in the public eye, it’s so fun and something we definitely had a choice in.” Demi commented back, “I absolutely adore you all and I am so incredibly proud of you.”
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield’s Statement
We’ve seen former couple Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz deal with the press, and now we’re revisiting another once-iconic duo. Actors Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield dated from 2010 to 2015, and had a very particular approach with the paparazzi.
As shown here, the stars held up information for various charitable organizations when they spotted nearby photographers. In doing so, they drew attention to the fact that celebrity photos are superficial and a waste of everyone’s time. Good on them!
Amanda Seyfried’s Eventual Acceptance
For some celebrities, it’s easier to give the paparazzi a few shots than be hounded by them without permission. This is the ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ mentality. After all, they’re not going anywhere, right?
American actress Amanda Seyfried turned the tables on the paparazzi by posing for a photograph with them. We’re big fans of the photographer on the left, who seems to really be enjoying his brief moment in front of the camera.
Jack Black’s Camera Grab
On several occasions, actor and musician Jack Black has gotten into it with the paparazzi. Sometimes, he’s joking — and other times, not so much. In this picture we can see the Tenacious D vocalist going to grab a camera as it tries to record some footage of the star.
More importantly, Jack Black is wearing a completely incredible t-shirt in this image. Perhaps the photographer just wanted to get a shot of this wonderful giant kitten in New York apparel.
Bruce Willis’s Bottled Water
We’ve already seen that iconic actor Bruce Willis’ family is hounded by photographers. We can only imagine what he goes through on a daily basis. On one occasion, the star got irritated by paps as he left a medical building in Beverly Hills.
He decided to open his bottle of water and throw it all over their cars. As we’ve seen, these sorts of outbursts almost always work out well for photographers. They managed to get this action shot of the action star mid-throw.
Justin Bieber’s Gas Mask
Like some others on this list, the Biebs has a spotty history when it comes to paparazzi. On one occasion, he drove his car into a bunch of photographers while trying to leave a Beverly Hills church.
As a result, one person was taken to the local hospital. More recently, Justin has spoken out about intrusive pictures of his wife, Hailey Baldwin. In this picture, the popstar wears a gas mark in order to cover his very famous face.
Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman’s Cardboard Covers
Clearly, Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield had an impact on other often photographed celebrities. Actress Anne Hathaway and her businessman husband Adam Shulman used the same approach to avoid being snapped without their permission.
On their cardboard face covers, Anne and Adam actually called out their celebrity inspiration. Anne’s mini placard says, “Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield had a great idea!” followed by more charity websites. Combine this with Pete Wentz’s paper plate mask and we’re onto a winner!
