Podcasts are the new normal. It’s safe to make that statement given that 75% of Americans over the age of 12 are familiar with podcasting. From the likes of Seth Godin, Tim Ferris, and Joe Rogan, there is a podcast about everything and anything these days. And, as of recently, there is one that takes a look at life and all its seriousness through thoughtful dialogue and humor. Its creators are Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes, and the name is — wait for it — Smartless.
How Smartless Was Born
Aside from being the same trade, the three have been friends for a long time. Jason and Sean had actually been talking about starting a podcast for a long time before eventually deciding to do it. They wanted a third person to join the project and, what do you know, Arnett was first on the list. It’s their innate curiosity and passion that really bonds them together and makes for such an organic partnership. Not long after, their spontaneity and hard work paid off, and Smartless was introduced to the world with its first episode airing on July 20.
So far, episodes have been ranging between 45 to 60 minutes long, with an average of just under an hour. It has a very chill vibe, as if you’re having a drink with your friends on the couch and discussing things you’re all interested in. Smartless really pulls you in rather seamlessly and makes you part of the conversation in a non-invasive way. It really proves to be a fantastic podcast thus far.
An Impressive Guest List
One of the latest guests was Robert Downey Jr., who is no stranger to podcasts. In their hour-long episode, which feels more like five minutes, the four go through the actor’s life lessons (especially those after 50), his past, and their shared experiences. It’s a fantastic episode — definitely worth the time.
Another one of their guests was none other than comedy legend Will Ferrell. It’s 47 minutes of pure joy to the ears, and that’s all you need to know. Other guests who’ve already been on the podcast include Seth Rogen, Kamala Harris, Melissa McCarthy, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, and Dax Shepard.
